The 2,800 kg figure needs a label
Read an older Fortuner thread and you'll see 2,800 kg. Open a later brochure and it says 3,100 kg. Both are right. Toyota's May 2019 to May 2020 automatic manual gives a 2,800 kg trailer maximum and a 2,750 kg gross vehicle mass. The September 2023 specification sheet gives its automatic range 3,100 kg braked towing and a 2,800 kg GVM.
In the earlier manual, 2,800 kg caps the whole loaded trailer. In the later sheet, 2,800 kg caps the vehicle, including passengers, gear and the load pressing down through the hitch. A caravan under 2,800 kg tells you nothing about that second limit. You still need to know what the packed Fortuner weighs once it's hitched.
In a December 2022 discussion, an owner asked about trailer tare, camping gear and passengers. Tare leaves out everything you load afterwards, and the passengers count against the car's GVM.
Toyota's current Fortuner page records discontinuation from April 2026. If you're buying used, match the build period and transmission to the original manual, and check each car's own paperwork instead of assuming every Fortuner sold before discontinuation matches these examples.
What the later GX, GXL and Crusade can carry
The September 2023 sheet lists maximum kerb masses of 2,175 kg for the GX, 2,185 kg for the GXL and 2,190 kg for the Crusade. Against the shared 2,800 kg GVM, that leaves 625, 615 and 610 kg before you add gear, passengers, luggage and the ball load.
The matching OM0K805E owner's manual, covering August 2023 to August 2024, adds what the brochure leaves out: a 5,550 kg GCM and a 310 kg ball maximum. With the full 3,100 kg trailer behind it, the combined limit leaves only 2,450 kg for the unhitched loaded vehicle. Take off each maximum kerb and the room for people and gear becomes 275 kg in the GX, 265 kg in the GXL and 260 kg in the Crusade.
For the GXL, the two ceilings work out as min(2,800 − 310, 5,550 − 3,100) − 2,185 = 265 kg. The GVM sum alone gives 305 kg, which overstates the full-tow allowance by 40 kg. The ball mass is already part of the complete trailer mass, so it comes off the GVM side of the sum and isn't subtracted again from GCM.
The August 2024 to August 2025 manual repeats the main ratings. The September 2023 kerb entry still isn't a weighed figure for a later car with options or accessories, so swap the brochure estimate for a measured one when you assess a specific vehicle.
Follow one GXL from a 2,800 kg trailer to 3,100 kg
Run one GXL through the sums, starting from the 2,185 kg maximum kerb figure. The added loads are round example numbers, so substitute yours. Add 200 kg of people, 70 kg of accessories and 45 kg of luggage, and the unhitched loaded car weighs 2,500 kg. Leave weight-distribution-hitch transfer out for now so the load accounting stays simple.
Hitch a complete loaded trailer of 2,800 kg with 280 kg on the ball, and the vehicle weighs 2,780 kg while the trailer axles carry 2,520 kg. Together that's 5,300 kg: 20 kg under GVM and 250 kg under GCM. Both totals fit, though the front and rear axles are still unweighed.
Keep exactly the same people, accessories and luggage, and switch to a 3,100 kg loaded trailer with 310 kg on the ball. Now the vehicle carries 2,810 kg and the trailer axles 2,790 kg. The whole combination is 5,600 kg, 10 kg over GVM and 50 kg over GCM. The trailer sits right on its rating, and the rig is still over two other limits.
To meet the combined ceiling at that trailer mass, the vehicle has to come down from 2,500 to 2,450 kg before the ball goes on. That means taking 50 kg out of the added loads, which leaves the 265 kg allowance worked out above. The hitched vehicle is then 2,760 kg and the combination 5,550 kg, with nothing to spare on GCM.
For the terms behind these sums, see the AU GCM guide. Either add the unhitched loaded car to the complete trailer, or add all the axle readings of the hitched combination. Add the complete trailer to a car that's already hitched and you've counted the ball twice.
Toyota's 310 kg ball limit has a loading instruction
OM0K805E asks for tongue load between 9 and 11 per cent of total trailer weight, with a 310 kg maximum. Both conditions apply. With 3,100 kg of trailer, 11 per cent would be 341 kg, which is over that maximum. So check the coupling load against 310 kg whatever percentage you aim for, and make the trailer maker's loading instructions work within the vehicle's limits too.
Weigh the coupling with the trailer loaded the way you'll travel. Water, gas, food and gear change both the total and where it sits, so a brochure's empty ball weight won't give you the loaded value. If the trailer can't be loaded to suit both the Fortuner and its own instructions, change the combination. Moving heavy gear behind the trailer axles just to bring the ball load down is a poor fix.
The earlier automatic manual's 280 kg maximum is another reason to keep build periods apart. A towbar stamped for more doesn't raise the vehicle's own ceiling. Toyota's manual says to observe the hitch assembly's limit even where the vehicle is rated higher, so treat the fitted bar, the coupling and the vehicle as three separate limits.
The 1,460 kg rear axle and the distributing hitch
The later manual lists a 1,420 kg front axle maximum and a 1,460 kg rear maximum. The coupling load sits behind the rear axle, so the rear can gain more than the measured ball load while the front gets lighter. Get actual front and rear axle readings, and note the passengers, gear and hitch setting at the time. A total vehicle reading or a level-looking caravan won't show you those axle loads.
Toyota recommends a distributing hitch when towing a caravan, and a sway-control device when the total trailer weight exceeds the vehicle's weight. That's the guidance in the matched manual. A 2021 towing review called a distribution hitch largely cosmetic; follow Toyota's recommendation anyway and check the axle loads on a weighbridge.
An approved, correctly adjusted weight-distribution hitch moves load between the vehicle and trailer axles. The luggage, passengers and trailer mass are all still there, so it can't fix the 50 kg GCM excess in the second GXL example, and the hitch's own weight goes on the load list. Ask the installer to follow both makers' instructions, then check the adjusted result with axle weights.
When the caravan setup changes, keep the hitch setting tied to the measurements it was based on. Get the loadmate app to record the approved setup, model how a changed WDH adjustment redistributes load and compare it with later weigh-ins. Re-weigh the axles after any adjustment to confirm the real result.
What older towing accounts can actually tell a buyer
In a 2018 Caravaners Forum discussion, a buyer weighed the caravan's coupling load against his planned touring gear, and another Fortuner owner asked how the ball rating answered that. The real question is what's left for the family once the gear and the actual ball load are on. A third contributor, Navman, urged weighing the rear axle as well as the vehicle total. The weighbridge figures the first poster later supplied were for a Prado, so use your own car's readings.
Michael Browning's August 2021 long-distance Fortuner tow test also touches on fuel-range planning and gear selection. Its caravan figure is the tare, so read it as an empty weight. A 2022 Toyota Owners Club question about fitting a transmission cooler to a Fortuner towing a two-tonne caravan is one owner's question; it doesn't show that the Fortuner overheats or that every towing Fortuner needs one. If you notice symptoms, take the actual load details to Toyota or your mechanic.
A 2020 Whirlpool buyer was trying to make the caravan work with the family-car role. Seven seats don't come with seven people's worth of GVM. If you need the third row, weigh the passengers and their luggage into the same record before deciding whether the caravan fits.
The checks to make on the actual used Fortuner
Start with its VIN, build date, transmission and matching manual. For the September 2023 example, the working limits are 3,100 kg trailer, 310 kg ball, 2,800 kg vehicle, 5,550 kg combination and 1,420/1,460 kg front/rear axles. Check any modifications separately: springs, a bigger towbar or a seller mentioning a GVM upgrade need paperwork showing what the finished vehicle is actually rated to.
Check the VIN against current recall records and the service history. REC-001315, published in December 2020, covers specified 2018-2020 Fortuners and HiLuxes with a brake-booster manufacturing fault. Inclusion and repair are specific to each VIN, so check for other campaigns while you're there.
Record the loaded vehicle, coupling and axle measurements, noting the fuel, passengers and gear aboard. Anything that changes after weighing goes into the next trip review. If you're comparing alternatives, the Prado 150 and Pajero Sport have their own mass limits and source periods, so run the same caravan and family through each one's numbers.

Keep the Fortuner's hitch setting tied to its load
Where the vehicle and equipment makers approve a weight distribution hitch, record the Fortuner's actual setup in loadmate and model how an adjustment shifts axle load. Re-weigh the axles when the caravan load or hitch setting changes. The screen shows a demo WDH view.
Common questions
- Can a Toyota Fortuner tow 3,100 kg?
The Australian September 2023 automatic range is rated to tow 3,100 kg braked. Its matched manual also caps GVM at 2,800 kg, GCM at 5,550 kg and ball load at 310 kg. At full trailer and ball load, the GXL example leaves 265 kg for people and gear above its 2,185 kg maximum kerb figure. Check your actual build, axle loads and towing equipment.
- Why do some Fortuner automatic figures say 2,800 kg?
Toyota's May 2019 to May 2020 automatic manual gives a 2,800 kg trailer maximum. The later September 2023 range tows 3,100 kg, and on that car 2,800 kg is the GVM. They're different limits from different periods, so use the manual that matches your vehicle.
- How much payload is left with a caravan attached?
It depends on the trailer and ball masses, the variant and what's fitted to the car. With a 3,100 kg complete trailer and 310 kg ball, the September 2023 maximum-kerb figures leave 275 kg in the GX, 265 kg in the GXL and 260 kg in the Crusade for people and gear. A lighter trailer changes the GCM sum, but its ball load still counts against GVM.
- Does a weight-distribution hitch increase Fortuner capacity?
No. Toyota's later manual recommends a distributing hitch for caravan towing, but it only moves load between axles; the mass and the ratings stay the same. Count the hitch in the load record, follow both makers' instructions and check the axle weights after adjustment. GVM, GCM, trailer and component limits all still apply.
- Does a Fortuner need a transmission cooler for a two-tonne caravan?
One owner asking about a cooler doesn't make it a Toyota requirement. Follow the matching manual and service guidance, and have any symptoms checked with the actual trailer and load details. A cooler or suspension change on its own doesn't raise GVM, GCM or towing capacity.
Understand the weight limits
Every figure above is governed by a manufacturer-set limit. These guides explain what each term means and how they fit together.
