In February 2026, five Bridgestone Dueler all-terrain tires went up for sale in Colorado, four of them with 87 miles on them and the fifth, the full-size spare, with none. They were the factory set off a 2026 Outback Wilderness whose owner wanted something more aggressive for off-roading. An ordinary swap, three months into the model year, except for the rating that drove away on those sidewalls: every tire carries a load index, and of all the figures that govern a loaded Outback, that index is the only one an owner ever gets to change. Subaru's 2026 manual gears the change to run one way. A replacement tire with a lower load range may lower the GVWR and GAWR limitations, it says, and a replacement with a higher load range does not raise them. Every other rating on the car left the factory fixed. The one under it is a ratchet, and the ratchet only turns down.

The trailer answer itself takes a sentence, because Subaru split the 2026 lineup cleanly in two by engine. Almost everything after that sentence lives on the car itself: Subaru publishes neither a GVWR nor a payload figure for the Outback, so both sit on labels in the driver's door frame, next to the placard that names the load index the ratchet turns against. Reading those surfaces takes about two minutes, and it is where a real trailer decision on this car gets settled.

How much can a Subaru Outback tow?

A 2026 Subaru Outback is rated to tow 2,700 lb with the 2.5L engine and 3,500 lb with the 2.4L turbo, and the engine is the only choice that moves the number. Symmetrical AWD and the Lineartronic CVT are standard on all six trims, there is no tow package on the order sheet, and the hitch itself is a dealer-installed option on every trim. Half of the 2026 lineup is rated 2,700 lb, so the first thing to settle is which engine you bought; both figures come from Subaru's own 2026 trim comparison and its 2026 owner's manual.

The 2.5L is a 180 hp, 178 lb-ft four; the 2.4L turbo makes 260 hp and 277 lb-ft from 2,000 rpm, and the extra 800 lb of rating rides entirely on that engine. The tongue figures deserve one note about where they live. Subaru's 2026 media spec sheet dropped the towing line altogether, and the trim comparison never carried a tongue figure, so 270 lb and 350 lb exist only in the owner's manual, printed identically on pages 424 and 427. Anyone hunting a spec sheet for a 2026 tongue figure will come back with the trailer figure alone; the manual is where the pair lives. Do you need trailer brakes to tow with an Outback?

Above 1,000 lb, yes: Subaru requires adequate trailer brakes once the trailer and its cargo exceed 1,000 lb total, on either engine. Below that line the manual prints a second, smaller pair of figures, 1,000 lb of trailer and 100 lb of tongue weight, identical for the 2.5L and the turbo.

That 1,000 lb row is the most misread number on the car. In one long owner thread, a first-time tower was told the real maximum for a stock Outback was 1,000 lb and that the bigger figure did not apply; other owners corrected it in the same thread, and one reported towing 2,000 lb regularly behind XTs across six years. The manual's own structure settles it: 1,000 lb is the unbraked condition rather than the rating, and the condition is buyable. A braked trailer restores the full 2,700 lb or 3,500 lb.

What that purchase involves is worth knowing before the trailer lot. The genuine Subaru hitch wires a four-pin connector, which carries lights and turn signals and nothing else, and the manual never mentions a factory brake controller. So a trailer with electric brakes needs a controller and its wiring added, and a trailer with surge brakes brings its own. One further line from the same chapter: never connect a trailer's hydraulic brake lines to the vehicle's.

Why does tongue weight rule out trailers before the tow rating does?

Because the caps arrive early: 350 lb, or 270 lb on a 2.5L car, is reached by trailers that sit comfortably inside the trailer rating. A Wilderness owner put it plainly in a 2022 thread that has since been read 15,000 times: "Sadly, I just realized that the owners manual says my factory tow hitch is limited to 350 lb tongue weight. So, all of the under 3500 lb trailers I was looking at are now excluded because they have 350+ dry tongue weight ratings."

The arithmetic behind that discovery is Subaru's own. The manual asks for a tongue load of 8 to 11% of the total trailer weight, and separately forbids exceeding the cap. Run the band against the cap on a turbo car: a trailer that balances at 11% hits 350 lb at about 3,180 lb of loaded weight, 320 lb before the rating runs out, while a trailer balancing at 8% can use the full 3,500 lb and put 280 lb on the ball. On a 2.5L car the same band puts the 270 lb cap at about 2,450 lb for an 11% trailer. The heavier the trailer, the thinner the slice of Subaru's own band it may legally occupy.

An illustrative example, current in nuCamp's 2026 specification sheet: the TAB 400, an 18 ft 3 in teardrop, publishes 2,885 lb of dry weight and a 450 lb dry tongue weight. The dry weight fits a turbo Outback's rating with 615 lb to spare. The tongue figure is 100 lb past the 350 lb cap before a propane bottle, a battery or a single bag goes aboard, and loading the trailer only adds to it. A trailer that suits this car has to clear both tests at once, which is why owners keep finding that the second number, not the headline one, writes the shortlist.

Subaru's loading instructions are specific about where the weight goes: roughly 60% of the trailer's load ahead of the trailer axle, 40% behind, balanced side to side, and the manual even describes weighing the tongue at towing height with a bathroom scale and a jack. Where are the rest of an Outback's numbers printed?

On the car. Subaru publishes no GVWR, GAWR, payload or GCWR figure for the 2026 Outback in its trim comparison, its media spec sheet or anywhere in the 580-page owner's manual, which prints definitions and then points at the car itself: the GVWR "is shown on the certification label located at the bottom of driver's side door pillar." Three surfaces carry what the brochures do not, and all three are readable in about two minutes:

  • The certification label, at the bottom of the driver's-side door pillar: the GVWR and both axle ratings for the exact car it is glued to.
  • The tire and loading placard, on the same pillar: the occupant-and-cargo limit printed for this one car, plus the tire size, speed symbol and load index any replacement must match.
  • The sidewalls themselves: each tire's own maximum load, molded in pounds next to its index.

The placard's occupant-and-cargo figure does more work than most owners expect, because the manual counts the trailer's tongue load inside it. Subaru's stated arithmetic is that cargo capacity equals the load limit minus the total weight of occupants, minus optional equipment such as a hitch, minus the tongue load of a trailer when one is attached. A 350 lb tongue is 350 lb that the people and the gear no longer have.

What do the tires have to do with the tow rating?

Subaru counts them into GVWR and GAWR, and of everything those ratings rest on, the tires are the only piece an owner ever swaps. The manual's rule is that the sum of the four tires' maximum load ratings must exceed the GVWR, and each axle pair's sum must exceed that axle's GAWR. It is equally clear about the converse: GVWR and GAWR are set by the suspension, the axles and the body as well as the tires, so the car "cannot necessarily be loaded up to the tire's maximum load rating," and a load index "applies only to the tire, not to the vehicle." The tire is a floor under the ratings, not a permission slip. What makes it this car's live issue is which floors Subaru chose, and what happened to them for 2026.

Cold pressures are 35 psi front and 33 psi rear on all three fitments. The pound figures come off the standard load-index scale, anchored by the manual's own worked conversions; the number to trust on your own car is the MAX LOAD marking on the sidewall itself, which the manual walks through reading.

The indexes did not land where the ratings suggest. The two 19-inch trims, Limited XT and Touring XT, carry the same 3,500 lb rating as the Wilderness and wear the lowest-rated tire Subaru fits to this car: 1,709 lb per corner against the Wilderness's 1,874 lb, a difference of 165 lb per tire and 660 lb across the car, inside one tow rating. And the fitment is new. In 2025 both trims rode 18-inch wheels at index 100; the 2026 move to 19s took 55 lb of rated load off each corner in the same model-year change that made each car 36 to 37 lb heavier.

Current owners are already moving the same lever, mostly downward in wheel size and not always with the index in view. In a January 2026 wheel thread, new XT owners talk through all-terrain fitments and getting off the 19s; one Touring XT buyer wrote that he was kicking around the idea of downsizing from the 19s to 18s, "just to get a little more sidewall." The manual referees every one of those swaps with two sentences: the replacement must match the size, speed symbol and load index printed on the placard, and a lower load range may pull the GVWR and GAWR down while a higher one raises nothing. Even Subaru's own winter advice moves the XTs off their fitment, telling 19-inch cars to run their winter tires as 225/60R18s on 18-inch wheels, and tire chains cannot be used on this car at all for lack of clearance.

Two more tire rules end a towing day outright. A sealed puncture is a no-tow condition: the manual allows the sealant kit to get the car moving and forbids towing a trailer on a sealed tire. And the temporary spare that five of the six trims carry is never to be towed on; the Nissan Frontier page walks through what that rule does to a trip mid-way, and the Wilderness is the one Outback that can put a full-size wheel back on and keep going.

On most trailers the tongue cap arrives first. The placard's occupant-and-cargo figure usually goes next, once the tongue load joins the people inside it, and the trailer rating itself is often the last of the three to run out. The tires sit under all of them, and none of the four checks shares arithmetic with another.

1,709 lb is the lowest tire load rating Subaru fits to any 2026 Outback, and it rides under the two 19-inch trims. It will probably never be the number that decides your trailer, but every number that will is the same kind of fact: physical, printed either in Subaru's documents or on the car itself. Your car holds the fourth number. Subaru prints the GVWR on the certification label at the bottom of the driver's door pillar and nowhere else, so that line comes off the car itself: read the label, type the figure, then add the trailer's rated and empty weights. The check is free and runs in the browser. Three comparisons follow: trailer weight beside the 3,500 lb rating, ball load beside the 350 lb cap, loaded car beside the GVWR you typed. Each one finishes with its own grade, pass (well matched), caution (careful) or fail (no), so a tight tongue line cannot hide behind a comfortable trailer line. A combined-weight comparison would need a GCWR, and Subaru publishes none for the Outback. A blank tongue box gets filled at 12.5% of the trailer's rated weight and marked as an estimate, which sits above Subaru's 8 to 11% band, so a published tongue figure is worth typing over it.

Swap in the 2.5L trims' figures and the same form carries 2,700 lb of rating, a 270 lb cap and the Premium's 3,741 lb curb weight. Either way, the grades describe the trailer exactly as entered. Pack the same trailer for a real weekend and the tongue and the total both move, so the question the check answers today is the one that reopens every time the load changes: whether the rig is still inside every one of its lines.

What does Subaru's manual require before the first tow?

More than most owners plan for, and the two strictest rules carry numbers. The first is about the odometer: under no circumstances, the manual says, should a trailer be towed with a new vehicle, or with any new powertrain component, for the first 1,000 miles. Because the 2026 Outback is an all-new generation, every single buyer of one meets that rule, and it applies again after an engine, transmission, differential or wheel-bearing replacement at any age.

The second is a speed. Never exceed 45 mph when towing in hilly country on hot days. Subaru attaches no temperature threshold or grade length to the rule, and it leaves the trailer weight alone: on hot grades the manual caps speed rather than load. The surrounding pages of the manual give the reason, and the reason is heat: climbing in hot weather, the air conditioner may shut itself off to protect the engine, and the driver is told to watch the coolant gauge and the AT OIL TEMP light. One gen-6 XT owner towing a 2,500 lb trailer reported 12 to 14 mpg at 65 to 70 mph and as much as 20 mpg at 45 to 50 mph with the same trailer.

Three shorter rules round out the pre-trip list. Blind-Spot Warning and Rear Cross-Traffic Warning should be switched off while towing, because the trailer blocks the radar, and Reverse Automatic Braking is a talk-to-your-dealer item. And towing puts the car on the severe-service maintenance schedule; Subaru's warranties do not cover damage caused by trailer towing.

Do these figures apply to a used Outback?

To a 2025, yes for the ratings; to anything older, only after checking the year. The 2026 car is a seventh generation, new from the ground up, and the headline record carried across the changeover intact: Subaru's 2025 spec sheet prints the same 2,700 lb and 3,500 lb by engine, and the same 270 lb and 350 lb of tongue, that the 2026 documents do. The conditions around them, the unbraked pair, the tongue band, the WDH prohibition, the break-in rule and the 45 mph rule, are the 2026 manual's wording; a 2025 owner should read them from that year's own manual. Older than that is a different generation of car, and figures from it, including the door-sticker GVWRs and derived payloads that circulate in owner threads, belong to those cars, not this one. On any used Outback, the certification label and placard in its own door frame are the numbers that count.

What did change for 2026 left the ratings themselves untouched. Nine trims became six, with the Base and both Onyx Editions dropped. The body grew taller on a wider track over the same 108.1-inch wheelbase, and every trim got heavier. The XT trims made the 18-to-19-inch wheel move described above. Full-size spares went from two trims to one, the Wilderness. And the Wilderness's all-terrain tire changed maker at the same size and 102T rating, from a Yokohama Geolandar to a Bridgestone Dueler 693 III developed for this car; the new fitment carries no three-peak-mountain-snowflake severe-snow symbol, and Bridgestone confirmed on the record in April 2026 that the certification "was not part of the requested spec."

Each change feeds the same one-way rule, and the rule is only as good as the facts it is given. Can I really only tow 1,000 lb without a brake controller?

The 1,000 lb figure is real and conditional. Without trailer brakes, both engines are limited to 1,000 lb of trailer and 100 lb of tongue weight, and Subaru requires adequate trailer brakes once the trailer and its cargo exceed 1,000 lb. With a braked trailer, the full 2,700 lb or 3,500 lb applies. The factory harness is 4-pin, lights only, so an electric-brake trailer needs a brake controller and its wiring added; a surge-braked trailer brings its own.

Do I need premium gas to tow with an Outback XT?

The engine's requirement is 87 AKI on every 2026 Outback.
