AU tow capacity

Kia Sportage towing capacity: 1,900 kg, 100 kg on the ball

The Australian MY27 Sportage diesel and hybrids are rated to tow 1,900 kg braked with a 100 kg maximum ball load. GVM is 2,260 kg for the diesel, 2,230 kg for the hybrid FWD and 2,290 kg for the hybrid AWD. Kia's Australian brochure and manuals don't list a GCM, so ask Kia for your build's figure before you count on any payload at full tow.

A 190 kg-rated towbar doesn't change the car

A January 2026 Australian owner question described a 2023 Sportage, a small fibreglass trailer and an aftermarket towbar advertised with a higher ball rating than the car. The bar can be built strong enough for more weight than the car is rated to carry on it.

For the current Australian MY27 range, Kia's brochure gives a 100 kg maximum towball download for the diesel and both hybrids. The matching ICE manual and hybrid manual list the same Australian/New Zealand limit. A bar stamped 190 kg still lets you put only 100 kg on this car.

Before you buy, read the bar's label and have the supplier confirm in writing that the bar, tongue and coupling suit your exact Australian Sportage (not one from another market or a generic catalogue listing), and that the wiring and trailer-brake setup match. If any installed part is rated below 100 kg, that lower figure becomes your limit.

How a 1,900 kg rating sits with a 100 kg ball limit

The 1,900 kg braked rating is the most the whole loaded trailer can weigh under Kia's conditions. The 100 kg ball limit is how much of that weight can press down on the towball. They're separate checks: a lightly loaded trailer can still put too much weight on the ball.

A 2022 Caravaners Forum discussion questioned the pairing by working backwards from a fixed 10 per cent ball load, which gives 1,000 kg. That's the rule of thumb talking; Kia's rating is still 1,900 kg. The right ball load for a given trailer comes from that trailer's maker. It cuts the other way too: a 1,900 kg caravan won't necessarily come in at or under 100 kg on the ball.

So get two numbers for the camper: its loaded weight and its measured ball load, with the water, gas and gear you'll actually carry. Check what the trailer maker and Kia each say about loading. If the trailer needs more ball load than the Sportage allows, look at a different trailer. Don't shuffle heavy gear to the back just to get the scale under 100 kg; that changes how the trailer tows as well as the number.

A May 2025 Whirlpool contributor liked the diesel and automatic but found the ball rating limited which campers would work. It's one buyer's opinion, not a measured tow, but the point is worth taking: ask the camper seller for loaded ball figures before you buy the towbar.

Three MY27 drivetrains, almost the same carrying room

Kia's MY27 brochure lists the diesel AWD at 1,764 kg kerb and 2,260 kg GVM, the hybrid FWD at 1,733/2,230 kg and the hybrid AWD at 1,793/2,290 kg. That's 496, 497 and 497 kg between kerb and GVM. Options and fitted gear change your own car's starting weight; a weighbridge shows the real figure.

Take off an assumed 100 kg ball load and GVM leaves 396 kg for the diesel and 397 kg for either hybrid. That has to cover the people, accessories and luggage not already in the kerb figure. Whether all of it is still there at full tow, Kia's paperwork can't tell you: the Australian brochure, manuals and approval records don't list a numeric GCM. Ask Kia for the GCM of your build.

The current Sportage RVD backs up the current diesel and hybrid AWD GVM and towing values. Its lighter mass entries are tare, so don't swap them in for brochure kerb to make the payload look bigger. The department also notes that the RVD holds data supplied by the applicant and that it doesn't verify every value itself.

Kia's online MY27 axle-weight instructions send you to the certification label for each axle rating. Read the label on your car, and ask Kia for any axle limit it doesn't show along with the combined mass for your build. Adding 1,900 kg to GVM doesn't give you a GCM. The AU GCM guide explains why the car, the loaded trailer and the whole combination each have their own limit.

A hybrid FWD example with a 1,200 kg loaded trailer

Here's one example rig, a MY27 hybrid FWD. Start from the 1,733 kg brochure kerb and add 230 kg of people, 30 kg of towbar hardware and 70 kg of luggage. Treat the 230, 30 and 70 kg as placeholders for your own numbers. Unhitched, the loaded car weighs 2,063 kg.

Hitch a 1,200 kg loaded trailer with 90 kg measured on the ball and the car carries 2,153 kg, which is 77 kg under its 2,230 kg GVM. The trailer's axles carry the other 1,110 kg. The whole rig weighs 3,263 kg: add the hitched car to the trailer axles, or the unhitched car to the full 1,200 kg trailer, and you get the same answer. The ball is counted once.

That clears the towing, ball and GVM limits. The GCM and axle margins stay unknown until you have Kia's GCM, the axle ratings and your own axle readings.

Now say the same trailer reads 110 kg at the coupling. You're 10 kg over the car's 100 kg limit, even though the trailer is well under 1,900 kg, and a stronger bar won't close that gap. Check how the trailer maker lets you load it and weigh again. If no allowed layout meets both makers' limits, pick a different trailer.

The coupling also changes the rear axle load

Kia's MY27 manuals put the coupling point 1,077 mm behind the rear-wheel centre, and the Australian brochure gives a 2,755 mm wheelbase. Because the coupling sits behind the axle, its download adds to the rear axle and tends to lift weight off the front. The extra load on the rear axle won't simply equal the number you measured at the ball. That's why a car under its GVM can still be over on one axle.

That 1,077 mm is measured from wheel centre to hitch. It isn't the body's rear overhang, so don't add a guessed towbar extension on top. For your own setup, confirm the installed geometry and approved equipment, then get front and rear axle readings at a weighbridge with the trailer loaded the way you'll tow. Don't work out axle limits from tyre ratings or by adding up other ratings.

Rear-seat passengers, luggage and the ball load all add to the rear axle, so check them together. Get the loadmate app to record the Sportage's confirmed limits and a measured baseline, and model how coupling load changes the car's axle loads. Leave unknown ratings marked as unknown, and weigh the real setup again after a big loading change.

Hybrid questions start with the limits, then a real tow

A December 2025 owner discussion asked whether a 1.6-litre Sportage hybrid could handle a 1,250 kg caravan, after towing with a larger diesel. Engine size alone won't answer that. Start with the exact model's limits, your actual loading and the handbook conditions, then look for towing reports from owners with the same setup on similar roads.

With that 1,250 kg caravan, a 100 kg ball reading sits right on the Sportage's limit, and a 90 kg reading leaves 10 kg. Find out whether the quoted caravan weight includes water, gas, food and travel gear, and measure the ball with the van loaded the way its maker allows. Water added after you weigh changes the total and can shift where it sits, so recheck both before you leave.

Think about where you're camping as well. A November 2021 Sportage buyer looking at a Swift camper was worried about muddy access after rain. Ask the campground about the surface, slope and access, and check what your car's handbook says about those conditions. Being inside the weight limits doesn't by itself mean the rig can get in.

The MY27 ICE manual also sets towing conditions: no towing for the first 2,000 km, stay below 100 km/h or the lower posted limit, and below 70 km/h on long uphill grades or the lower posted limit. Use the manual that matches your drivetrain, and follow whichever road limit is lower. These are Kia's conditions; the road rules of each state or territory you drive through still apply.

Older petrol Sportages, accessories and recalls

The current MY27 Australian sales sheet has diesel AWD and hybrid FWD/AWD columns. Kia's wider manuals also cover other configurations, which may not be sold here now and whose ratings may not suit a car registered in the same year. Note your car's model year, build and drivetrain before you pick figures.

In an October 2022 NSW-owner discussion, nobody could say clearly whether a bike rack would suit. That old, unclear answer doesn't amount to a ban on today's gear. Ask the bar and rack suppliers about the exact products you'd fit and what Kia's instructions say.

Check recalls by VIN too. REC-006557, published on 6 March 2026, covers specified 2025-build Sportages whose instrument cluster may go blank or respond slowly, and the fix is a software update. It doesn't cover every MY27 car, so confirm whether yours is included and whether the work has been done.

If your loaded camper can't meet the 100 kg ball limit along with the other confirmed limits, look at another vehicle on its own numbers. The Outlander and Tasman pages show two very different sets of towing and payload limits.

Common questions

Can an Australian Kia Sportage tow 1,900 kg?

The MY27 diesel AWD and hybrid FWD/AWD are rated for 1,900 kg braked with a 100 kg ball maximum. Your loaded trailer also has to fit the car's GVM, axle and towbar limits, and the GCM Kia confirms for your build, before you tow at the full rating.

Does a stronger aftermarket towbar increase the Sportage ball limit?

No. A bar rated above 100 kg doesn't raise the MY27 Australian Sportage's 100 kg maximum towball download. If any installed part is rated lower, that lower figure is your limit. Check that the bar, tongue and coupling suit your exact car, and follow the vehicle instructions.

Does 100 kg ball load mean the Sportage can only tow 1,000 kg?

Not by Kia's rating. The 1,000 kg figure comes from assuming the ball always carries 10 per cent of the trailer. What matters is that your actual trailer, loaded the way its maker allows, stays inside every vehicle limit at once. Weigh the loaded trailer and its ball load, and don't move heavy gear to the back just to get a lower reading.

Can a Sportage hybrid tow a small caravan?

The MY27 Australian hybrid FWD and AWD have the same 1,900 kg braked and 100 kg ball limits. Whether a particular caravan suits depends on its real loaded weight and ball load, how full the car is, and every limit that applies. A fuel-economy review done without a trailer tells you nothing about towing performance or range.

How much Sportage payload remains after hitching?

Using MY27 brochure kerb and an assumed 100 kg ball load, GVM leaves 396 kg for the diesel or 397 kg for either hybrid, for the occupants, equipment and luggage you add. Without a published GCM, nobody can say how much of that is left at full towing capacity, so weigh your car and ask Kia for its axle and combined limits.
