AU tow capacity

Kia Sorento towing capacity: 2,000 kg diesel, 1,650 kg hybrid

The Australian MY26 Sorento diesel is rated to tow 2,000 kg braked with a 200 kg maximum ball load, and its GVM is 2,630 kg. The hybrid (HEV) drops to 1,650 kg braked and 100 kg on the ball. Kia's Australian documents don't publish a GCM or a kerb weight for each trim, so ask Kia for your car's GCM and weigh the car before you count on payload at full tow.

Check the powertrain before you choose the trailer

A Sorento shopping list can start with seven seats and end with a caravan, and the engine you pick changes which caravan works. Kia's Australian MY26 combined brochure covers petrol, diesel, hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions. The petrol and diesel are rated to 2,000 kg braked and the HEV to 1,650 kg, and the MY26 PHEV document gives 1,010 kg.

The ball-load split matters just as much. The MY26 petrol/diesel owner's manual, page 9-5 gives Australian and New Zealand cars a 200 kg maximum. The MY26 HEV/PHEV manual, page 10-5 gives both hybrids 100 kg. So a caravan that suits the diesel may not suit an HEV, even when the caravan weighs less than 1,650 kg.

These are model-year figures, and not every grade in the documents may still be on order; the live Australian range leads with diesel and hybrid models. For a used or stock car, check its engine, drive, model year and fitted towbar against its own paperwork. A trim badge such as GT-Line won't tell you the towing limits. An August 2013 buyer comparing manual and automatic Sorentos faced a different gearbox split altogether, and those older ratings tell you nothing about a current diesel or hybrid.

Why owners keep asking about a 100 kg limit

The 100 kg question goes back years. A December 2015 Whirlpool buyer queried a salesperson's ball-load figure. In April 2026, a 2019 Sorento owner wanted a caravan for a family of four while keeping seven seats, after finding a claimed 100 kg limit. Those were real buying questions about particular older cars, and they don't set the limit for today's diesel.

For a current car, go to the Australian row of the table. The MY26 petrol/diesel manual also has rows for other markets with different values, and reading the wrong one recreates the old confusion. For the Australian MY26 diesel, the manual and brochure agree on 200 kg. For the HEV it's 100 kg. If you own an earlier generation, stick with your original manual and equipment limits unless Kia tells you otherwise for your car.

Check the match before you pay for the camper or the towing gear. A February 2013 Sorento owner had already bought an Expanda, a heavy-duty towbar and load-levelling equipment before asking whether the car could tow it. The April 2026 family still had time to choose a different camper. A model name like Swan or Expanda won't tell you the loaded ball load, so get the exact trailer's travel-ready figures and compare them with your exact Sorento. Gear you've already bought can't raise the car's limits.

One 1,500 kg trailer gives different diesel and HEV answers

Here's one example rig. The weights are made up for the example, not taken from a real Sorento or worked out from brochure tare; use your own measured figures. The unhitched Sorento weighs 2,450 kg with fuel, occupants, towbar and luggage aboard. The loaded trailer weighs 1,500 kg, with 120 kg measured on the ball. Hitched, the car weighs 2,570 kg and the trailer wheels carry 1,380 kg.

On the MY26 diesel, 2,570 kg is 60 kg under the 2,630 kg GVM. The 120 kg ball is 80 kg under the 200 kg maximum, and the trailer is 500 kg under the braked rating. So far so good, but you still need the real axle loads, the towbar's limits and Kia's GCM before you can call it a match.

Now put the same 2,450 kg unhitched load in an HEV AWD. Hitched, its 2,570 kg is under the 2,640 kg GVM, and the 1,500 kg trailer is under 1,650 kg. But 120 kg on the ball is 20 kg over the HEV's 100 kg maximum. The 70 kg left under GVM doesn't help: room under one limit can't make up for being over another.

The combined weight is 3,950 kg: the 2,450 kg unhitched car plus the 1,500 kg trailer, or the 2,570 kg hitched car plus 1,380 kg on the trailer wheels. Either way the ball is counted once. That's the total to compare with GCM once Kia gives you a figure.

The diesel's 60 kg margin changes with the next load

Go back to the diesel with 60 kg left under GVM. Add 80 kg of family gear to the car and it weighs 2,650 kg hitched, 20 kg over GVM, with the same trailer and ball load.

A second child seat or another bag belongs in the same record as the 120 kg ball load. Keep those measured loads and your Sorento's confirmed limits in the loadmate app, so each family trip review starts from what's been added or taken out. When that list changes, so does the diesel's 60 kg margin.

Moving the extra gear into the trailer won't automatically fix it. That changes the trailer's total and can change its ball load and balance, so check the trailer's allowed loading positions and ratings, and weigh again. Our GVM guide explains the car's carrying limit separately from the trailer and combination checks.

Brochure tare won't tell you what your Sorento can carry

The MY26 brochure lists diesel tare at 1,974 kg, but it doesn't call that the kerb weight of your trim with your fitted gear. Take it off the 2,630 kg GVM, call the rest holiday payload, and you've hidden the starting point. The caravan weights guide explains the different vehicle and trailer terms. For a real trip, take the people, fuel and gear to a certified weighbridge and record the unhitched weight. Then get separate axle readings for the loaded rig, because one total can't answer the axle checks.

Kia's manuals say the combination, the car, its axles, the trailer and the tongue must each stay within their limits. The Australian documents don't give a numeric GCM or a kerb weight per trim, and adding GVM to the braked rating won't give you a GCM. Until Kia supplies your car's figures, the full-tow payload stays unknown. A missing number doesn't mean the combined capacity is unlimited.

The current government-hosted Sorento RVD needs care too. It carries applicant-supplied tare values and a PHEV braked figure of 1,350 kg, where the MY26 Kia manual and brochure say 1,010 kg. The 17 February 2026 RVD already showed 1,350 kg, so it isn't safe to read the gap as a later model-year increase. If you're buying a PHEV, get Kia's written rating for your VIN before choosing between the two. This article sticks with the MY26 manual figure.

A furniture trailer still loads the same coupling

A December 2025 owner moving from SA to Queensland asked whether a furniture trailer changed the ball-load problem from the caravan articles. The load changes where the weight sits, but the car's limit stays the same. Furniture, a camper and a boat each need their own loaded ball reading.

The Sorento manuals put the recommended coupling point 1,155 mm behind the rear-wheel centre, and the brochure gives a 2,815 mm wheelbase. As a simple lever sum, stationary and before any WDH load transfer, a 120 kg ball load adds about 169 kg at the rear axle and takes about 49 kg off the front. That's a change in axle load, not an axle rating or a measured split. The 1,155 mm is already the coupling distance, so don't add a hitch extension to it.

Kia's online MY26 vehicle-loading instructions say both axle ratings must be respected and put the certification label at the front edge of the centre pillar. Read the label on your car, ask Kia for any missing rating, and compare it with loaded axle readings. A car that sits level hasn't shown you its axle loads. Don't push luggage to the back of the trailer to force the ball reading under 100 kg either: Kia warns against loading the trailer heavier at the rear. Follow both makers' loading instructions, and if no layout meets the limits, change the load or the trailer.

Read the towing instructions as well as the capacity table

Kia's MY26 manuals say no towing for the first 2,000 km. They recommend staying below 100 km/h when towing and no more than 70 km/h on a long uphill grade, or the lower posted towing speed. Road rules and conditions can require less. Use the manual that came with your car, and leave European allowances and US tow-package figures out of an Australian decision.

Plan fuel stops around the loaded trip. A 2010 diesel automatic owner reporting in August 2013 saw consumption change with speed and headwinds on a long Australian trip. Their figures won't predict a MY26. Note your own loaded consumption, carry enough to reach the next stop with room for a change of route, and plan from that instead of the unhitched brochure figure.

Check the towbar, ball mount, coupling, wiring and trailer brakes as one assembled setup. NSW Government towing guidance treats the equipment limits and the vehicle limits as separate requirements. A higher rating on an aftermarket bar doesn't raise Kia's vehicle-side maximum. Get explicit compatibility advice before fitting a weight-distribution hitch, because Kia's manuals don't say you can use one.

For a used or stock car, check the VIN for open campaigns. The official March 2026 instrument-cluster recall lists specified 2025-built Kia vehicles, including the MQ4 Sorento. It doesn't cover every MY26 Sorento, so check yours and get any work done before you travel.

The diesel example has 60 kg left under GVM, and another child seat or bag changes that. Record those changes against your Sorento's confirmed limits in loadmate. The screen shows a demo axle-and-mass view; Kia's missing limits still need confirming before you treat the rig as fully checked.

Common questions

Is the Sorento's maximum ball weight really only 100 kg?

It depends on the model year and powertrain. Kia's Australian MY26 petrol/diesel manual gives 200 kg, and its MY26 HEV and PHEV manual gives 100 kg. Older-owner questions don't set a current diesel's limit, and a newer model's figure doesn't raise an older car's. Check your car's own manual and fitted equipment.

What should a family check before buying a caravan?

Get the caravan's loaded weight and measured ball load, then confirm your Sorento's model year and powertrain. Check the GVM, axle, trailer and towbar ratings, and ask Kia for the GCM. Seven seats don't guarantee room for everyone plus luggage and the ball load: the diesel example above is only 60 kg under GVM, before axles or GCM are checked.

Does the ball limit apply to a furniture trailer too?

Yes. The car and towbar limits apply whether the trailer carries furniture, camping gear or a boat. The contents and where they sit change the ball load, so weigh the loaded trailer and follow its loading instructions. A tandem axle or packing to the rear won't make an excessive ball load acceptable.

Can the Sorento hybrid tow the same caravan as the diesel?

Only if that caravan also fits the hybrid's lower limits and every other check. The Australian MY26 HEV is rated to 1,650 kg braked and 100 kg on the ball, against the diesel's 2,000 kg and 200 kg. In the example, a 1,500 kg trailer is under both braked ratings, but its 120 kg ball is 20 kg over the HEV maximum.

How much weight can a Kia Sorento carry while towing?

It depends on your car's weighed mass, passengers, accessories and ball load, checked against its GVM, axle limits and GCM. The Australian brochure gives tare rather than a kerb weight for each trim, and Kia hasn't published a numeric GCM, so nobody can give you a reliable full-tow payload figure from those documents. Weigh the loaded car and ask Kia for the missing limits.

Can an aftermarket towbar increase the towing limit?

No. A stronger towbar doesn't raise Kia's vehicle-side towing or ball-load maximum, and every part of the rig must be rated for the actual load. Confirm the exact towbar and ball mount, and don't assume a weight-distribution hitch is approved or adds capacity.
