Two 2026 Cummins trucks can share a trailer rating and leave different room for the equipment in the bed. It came up in a September 2026 owner discussion asking for actual Tradesman and Big Horn payload stickers. Ram's chart shows the gap; your truck's labels tell you which side of it you're on.
How much can a Ram 2500 tow?
Between 10,530 and 20,000 lb for 2026, depending on how the truck is configured and equipped. The lower endpoint is the 6.4L HEMI gas Power Wagon: Crew Cab, 6-ft-4 box, 4x4, 4.10 axle and 8,565 lb GVWR. Its GCWR, the maximum loaded truck-and-trailer weight, is 18,000 lb.
The 20,000 lb endpoint belongs to the 6.7L Cummins HO diesel with ZF Powerline eight-speed, Crew Cab, 8-ft box, 4x2 and 3.42 axle. One listed factory selection has 10,000 lb GVWR and 28,010 lb GCWR. Those details matter: the diesel short-box truck below has a lower tow rating and GCWR. 2026 Ram customer chart, 2500 columns.
To find your row, match model year, engine, transmission, cab, box, drive layout, axle ratio and factory GVWR, and check any sales-code condition against your build information. The US towing capacity chart compares the Ram with other vehicles. This page covers conventional trailers, work and travel trailers alike; fifth-wheel and gooseneck loading need their own assessment.
Why do two 19,960 lb Cummins trucks have different payloads?
Ram builds the same 2026 diesel Crew Cab short-box 4x2 at two factory GVWRs, with 2,560 lb or 3,600 lb of base payload. Both keep 19,960 lb towing and 27,870 lb GCWR.
Both trucks share the 6.7L Cummins HO, ZF Powerline eight-speed, Crew Cab, 6-ft-4 box, 4x2 and 3.42 axle:
| 2026 factory GVWR selection | Base chart payload | Maximum trailer weight | GCWR |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10,000 lb | 2,560 lb | 19,960 lb | 27,870 lb |
| 11,040 lb, eligible builds* | 3,600 lb | 19,960 lb | 27,870 lb |
*The starred 11,040 lb diesel rows apply to vehicles produced with sales codes Z2K/Z7G/Z3Y. They're separate factory builds, and the chart gives no route to re-rate a truck you already own. Ram's 2026 chart and footnotes.
That's 1,040 lb more the higher-GVWR truck can carry, which matters if your work equipment comes along on a camping trip, even with a trailer well below 19,960 lb.
Neither chart cell is your optioned truck's placard. Ram rounds chart figures to the nearest 10 lb and warns that maximum payload and maximum towing are mutually exclusive. Read the occupant-and-cargo capacity on your own truck, then subtract anything added since. The payload versus towing capacity guide explains how those two allowances are used.
What does the work truck carry before the trailer arrives?
People, tools, added accessories and hitch hardware already occupy some of the truck's carrying allowance before tongue weight is added. Ram's 2026 manual, pp. 197 and 201, requires the loaded truck and each axle to stay within their ratings.
Start with what stays in the truck between jobs. The tool load may stay aboard when you swap the work trailer for a travel trailer. If a canopy or other accessory was on the truck when you weighed it, it's already in that baseline, so don't count it again. An HDRams owner describing a 2021 diesel on a camping trip talked through a canopy and different water loads going out and coming back. It's an older truck, but the packing question is the one you'll face.
For your worksheet, note:
- the truck's GVWR, both gross axle weight ratings (GAWR) and its occupant-and-cargo capacity
- what was aboard when it was weighed
- the people and equipment you'll add for this tow, with hitch hardware listed separately from the trailer's tongue load
A CAT scale ticket gives you measured axle weights to compare with those labels.
How much room remains with a 10,000 lb work trailer?
In the example below, 200 lb of carrying room before weight-distribution effects, even though the trailer is 9,960 lb under the truck's rating. It's one made-up loadout to show the arithmetic, and every input below is an assumption.
The truck is the 2026 6.7L Cummins HO, ZF Powerline eight-speed, Crew Cab, 6-ft-4 box, 4x2, 3.42 axle, 10,000 lb GVWR selection from the comparison. Its official tow rating is 19,960 lb and its GCWR is 27,870 lb. Ram's 2026 chart.
The assumed 2,400 lb placard capacity sits below the chart's 2,560 lb base payload because the example truck is assumed to weigh 7,600 lb as built.
| Example input (assumed) | Weight |
|---|---|
| As-built truck, full fuel, no occupants or added gear | 7,600 lb |
| Occupant-and-cargo placard capacity | 2,400 lb |
| All occupants | 500 lb |
| Added tools, gear and accessories, excluding baseline equipment | 600 lb |
| Added hitch hardware | 100 lb |
| Complete loaded conventional work trailer, including tongue weight | 10,000 lb |
| Trailer's own GVWR | 12,000 lb |
| Loaded tongue weight, assumed measured | 1,000 lb |
Before hitching, the loaded truck accounts for 7,600 + 500 + 600 + 100 = 8,800 lb. Adding the 1,000 lb tongue load gives 9,800 lb. That's paper arithmetic before weight distribution, which changes the load each axle sees on a real scale.
| Check on the example loadout | Calculation | Remaining margin |
|---|---|---|
| Truck carrying allowance, before distribution effects | 2,400 − 500 − 600 − 100 − 1,000 lb | 200 lb |
| Vehicle's trailer rating | 19,960 − 10,000 lb | 9,960 lb |
| Loaded combination | 27,870 − (8,800 + 10,000) lb | 9,070 lb |
| Trailer's own GVWR | 12,000 − 10,000 lb | 2,000 lb |
The combination weighs 18,800 lb in this example: the 8,800 lb unhitched loaded truck plus the complete 10,000 lb trailer. Its 1,000 lb tongue load is already included in that trailer weight and is counted once in the combined total.
The 200 lb carrying margin is the tightest of these four. The table leaves out front and rear axle loads, tire and wheel limits, the fitted receiver and hitch components, trailer axle limits, and hitch adjustment and geometry, and any of those could turn out tighter. Weigh the loaded rig and follow the equipment's instructions before you decide which limit binds.
What hitch and brake checks does Ram specify?
For this 10,000 lb example trailer, Ram recommends a weight-distribution hitch and requires trailer brakes. These are Ram's thresholds, separate from any state trailer-brake law.
Ram recommends weight distribution at 5,000 lb and above in the 2026 manual, p. 198. Set it up to the instructions for your truck and hitch; the front-axle load guide explains the measurements involved. Ram's 20,000 lb trailer / 2,000 lb tongue Class V receiver figures are hardware ceilings. Check the receiver, ball, mount and coupler actually fitted, as well as the truck's own ratings. 2026 manual, p. 200.
The manual recommends trailer brakes above 1,000 lb and requires them above 2,000 lb. Electric trailer brakes need a compatible controller. Check the brakes and lights work on the trailer you're towing. 2026 manual, p. 205.
Check recall status by VIN too. NHTSA recall 26V059 covers certain 2025–2026 Ram 2500 trucks with an affected trailer tow module; trailer lighting or brake function can be lost, and the remedy is module replacement. A VIN check shows whether your truck is one of them.
How do I keep the carrying margin useful for the next job?
Keep your truck's factory ratings with its recorded load, and recheck each margin when the equipment aboard changes. In the example, the real decision is what can stay in the bed with 200 lb of carrying room, while the trailer rating still shows 9,960 lb spare.
In loadmate, the current weight checks show the entered limit, current weight and remaining margin for each check it can assess. Enter the ratings for your Ram's actual factory GVWR selection and the weights you know. Leave an axle rating out and that check stays unassessed; the bigger towing allowance can't stand in for it.
When you take work equipment out or add a load for the next job, record that change and review the Rig tab so the weight checks reflect it. As you get scale readings, they can replace the assumed weights.
Explore loadmate for your Ram's loaded margins. Before you decide which work equipment stays aboard, copy the GVWR and occupant-and-cargo figure off your own labels, then check the carrying and measured axle margins. Keep the unused trailer rating in its own column.
loadmate provides decision support for towing safety, not legal weight certification. Score, compliance checks, and trip readiness are based on the data you enter and the regulator information current at the time of release. For legal weight evidence, use a certified truck scale / CAT scale. Towing remains the operator's responsibility. See the safety disclaimer.

Check what stays aboard for the next job
In the Ram example, the trailer is 9,960 lb under its rating but the truck has only 200 lb of carrying room left. Enter your own truck's labels and the work equipment aboard in loadmate, then review the margins. Screen shown: another US rig's checks, not this Ram's result.

Frequently asked questions
- Can a 2026 Ram 2500 tow 20,000 lb?
Yes, in the specified 6.7L Cummins HO diesel, ZF Powerline eight-speed, Crew Cab 8-ft box, 4x2, 3.42 configuration. One listed factory selection has 10,000 lb GVWR and 28,010 lb GCWR. Your loaded vehicle, axle, hitch and trailer limits still apply. Ram's 2026 towing chart.
- Why can two Cummins Ram 2500 trucks have different payloads?
The factory GVWR and the fitted equipment. For the specified 2026 diesel Crew Cab 6-ft-4 box 4x2 with the 3.42 axle, Ram lists 2,560 lb base payload at 10,000 lb GVWR and 3,600 lb at the eligible 11,040 lb selection. The latter applies to vehicles produced with sales codes Z2K/Z7G/Z3Y. Read your own occupant-and-cargo placard. Ram's 2026 chart and footnotes.
- Does higher GVWR always mean a higher Ram 2500 tow rating?
No. The two 2026 Cummins Crew Cab 6-ft-4 box 4x2 selections compared above retain 19,960 lb towing and 27,870 lb GCWR at both 10,000 lb and eligible 11,040 lb GVWR. Their base chart payloads differ by 1,040 lb. Both are factory builds; the chart offers no owner re-rating route between them. Ram's 2026 chart.
- Does a 2026 Power Wagon tow as much as the diesel maximum?
No. Ram's 2026 chart rates the 6.4L HEMI gas Power Wagon Crew Cab 6-ft-4 box 4x4 with the 4.10 axle at 10,530 lb towing, 18,000 lb GCWR and 8,565 lb GVWR. The 20,000 lb maximum belongs to the specified diesel Crew Cab 8-ft box 4x2. Ram's 2026 chart.
- Do airbags or heavier axles raise my Ram 2500's GVWR?
No. Hardware changes alone leave the manufacturer's label limits where they are, and Ram's 2026 manual says heavier axle or suspension components don't necessarily increase GVWR. Keep using your own truck's ratings after adding equipment; another factory configuration's figures don't transfer. 2026 manual, p. 197.
- When does Ram recommend weight distribution and require trailer brakes?
The 2026 manual recommends a weight-distribution hitch at 5,000 lb trailer weight and above. It recommends trailer brakes above 1,000 lb and requires them above 2,000 lb, with a compatible controller for electric brakes. 2026 manual, pp. 198 and 205.
