In July 2026, an owner asked whether the new RAV4's rating changed the 2025 Hybrid XLE their family had bought. They were looking for the Toyota document behind a reported dealer claim. A separate March 2026 discussion concerned the LE AWD's lower rating. Both come down to knowing which vehicle a number belongs to before you pick a trailer with it.
How much can a Toyota RAV4 tow?
Published ratings for the US 2026 RAV4 run from 1,750 lb to 3,500 lb, with the LE Hybrid AWD still rated at 1,750 lb. The sixth-generation lineup has both Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid powertrains. Start with the full description of your vehicle, because neither “hybrid” nor “AWD” settles the number alone.
| Your US 2026 RAV4 | Published maximum loaded trailer |
|---|---|
| Hybrid LE, FWD or AWD | 1,750 lb |
| Hybrid XLE Premium or SE, FWD | 1,750 lb |
| Hybrid XLE Premium, Limited, Woodland, SE or XSE, AWD | 3,500 lb |
| Plug-in Hybrid SE, Woodland or XSE | 3,500 lb |
| Plug-in Hybrid GR SPORT | Unpublished in the US comparison |
Toyota's 2026 Sales Consultant Guide puts the LE and XLE Premium figures together on page 6. An LE AWD stays at 1,750 lb while an XLE Premium AWD reaches 3,500 lb. Limited, Woodland, SE and XSE appear on pages 7, 9, 11 and 12. Toyota doesn't say why the LE is the exception.
The Plug-in Hybrid brochure, page 9, names SE, Woodland and XSE for its 3,500 lb claim. Toyota's live GR SPORT and XSE comparison displays a dash for GR SPORT. A dash means no figure is published there; it isn't a 0 lb rating or a ban on towing. If you own a GR SPORT, ask Toyota for its towing instructions before you pick a trailer.
The US towing capacity chart puts the RAV4's published range alongside other SUVs; for your own trailer, go by your exact grade.
Did the 2026 change raise my 2025 Hybrid's rating?
No. The US 2025 RAV4 Hybrid manual specifies 1,750 lb, and a higher figure for a 2026 grade leaves the 2025 rating where it was. Its towing chapter, manual OM0R193U, also gives a 6,670 lb gross combined weight rating, or GCWR.
This trips people up when a search result drops the year. A 2025 XLE Hybrid AWD owner asking in June 2026 had seen both 1,750 lb and 3,500 lb while looking at a camper, and couldn't find a trailer rating on the door panel. The door label and the towing instructions carry different information; the tow rating is in the towing instructions.
For a 2025 Hybrid, keep using 1,750 lb unless Toyota gives you an amendment that applies to your vehicle. If a dealer tells you otherwise, ask for that document and keep a copy. The 2026 launch announcement describes the new generation's ratings.
Which RAV4 details belong with the number I record?
Record the model year, powertrain, grade and drivetrain alongside the Toyota rating you use. For example, “2026 LE Hybrid AWD” points to a different published tow figure from “2026 XLE Premium Hybrid AWD.” Keep Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid separate throughout the lookup.
Use Toyota's matching model-year documents for towing capacity and GCWR. The certification label supplies the maximum loaded vehicle weight, or GVWR, and each gross axle weight rating, or GAWR. The Tire and Loading Information label supplies the combined occupant-and-cargo allowance. Toyota explains these separate limits in the 2026 Hybrid towing and vehicle load-limit chapters.
Photograph your labels and keep the Toyota pages that apply. Read the ratings on the installed receiver, ball and coupler too, and write them down separately from the vehicle's rating. The what can I tow guide explains how the separate vehicle, trailer and coupling checks fit together.
What changes if I entered 3,500 lb for an LE AWD?
Nothing physical changes, but the same trailer goes from looking fine to 250 lb over the rating. Take one example 2026 US LE Hybrid AWD and a trailer weighing 2,000 lb fully loaded, including an assumed 200 lb tongue load.
Toyota supplies the 1,750 lb tow rating and 6,670 lb GCWR. The weights are assumptions for this one comparison; the trailer's own rating and the other vehicle and component limits are left open.
| The same 2,000 lb loaded trailer | Tow-rating field | Arithmetic | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Before correcting the record | 3,500 lb, entered in error | 3,500 − 2,000 = 1,500 lb | Apparent room based on the wrong rating |
| After matching the LE AWD source | 1,750 lb | 1,750 − 2,000 = −250 lb | Trailer is 250 lb over the vehicle's rating |
Assume the loaded RAV4 weighs 4,500 lb before attaching the trailer, including fuel, people, cargo and hitch hardware. With an ordinary ball hitch and no weight-distribution transfer, the 200 lb tongue load makes the hitched vehicle 4,700 lb and leaves 1,800 lb on the trailer axles. Combined weight is 4,500 + 2,000 = 6,500 lb, or equivalently 4,700 + 1,800 = 6,500 lb. Tongue load is included once.
That's 170 lb under the 6,670 lb GCWR in the 2026 Hybrid manual's towing-weight section, with the trailer still 250 lb over the LE AWD tow rating. The correction only shows a problem that was already there.
The assumed 200 lb tongue load is 10% of 2,000 lb, inside Toyota's 9-11% guidance, though a percentage says nothing about the hitch's own capacity. This arithmetic leaves out GVWR, the occupant-and-cargo allowance, axle loads and ratings, the trailer's GVWR and axle ratings, receiver, ball and coupler limits, brakes and the trailer maker's instructions, so treat it as a partial check.
How do I review my RAV4 after correcting its rating?
Match the saved rating to your RAV4's Toyota document, then review the refreshed limits against the load you recorded. The LE example's mistaken entry made a 2,000 lb trailer appear to have 1,500 lb of room. Saving 1,750 lb with the vehicle stops that error following you into the next trip.
In loadmate, you manually enter your vehicle details and limits. When you edit a saved rating, saving rebuilds the limits and marks the Rig Score for refresh; the next visit to the Rig Tab refreshes it. The limit-status view compares the recorded loads with those saved limits and shows numeric margins. Check those rows again whenever you record a different trailer load.
Fill in the vehicle and trailer records for your own setup; a blank or “No Limit” cell means that limit is still unchecked. Keep the label photos and Toyota pages separately, since the app stores the values you enter.
Explore loadmate for your RAV4's recorded limits. Then weigh your current loaded trailer and compare it with the corrected rating.

Keep the matched RAV4 rating with your load record
The example 2,000 lb trailer is 250 lb over the 2026 LE Hybrid AWD's 1,750 lb rating. In loadmate, correct your saved rating from the matching Toyota document, then open the Rig Tab to review recorded loads against the updated limits. Limits you haven't entered stay unresolved. What conditions come with the 2026 Hybrid's tow rating?
Toyota's 2026 Hybrid manual requires service brakes above 1,000 lb and gives operating instructions alongside its maximum weights. The 2,000 lb example trailer would need adequate service brakes, though it's already over the LE AWD's rating.
The 2026 Hybrid towing chapter also gives these instructions:
- Tongue weight of 9-11% of the actual gross trailer weight, with vehicle and equipment limits observed.
- A suitably rated sway-control device above 2,000 lb gross trailer weight. At exactly 2,000 lb, the example doesn't cross it. Toyota recommends two or more trailer axles above 3,000 lb.
- A maximum towing speed of 65 mph, or a lower posted towing limit or lower limit specified by the trailer maker.
- For a new vehicle or new powertrain components, Toyota recommends driving the vehicle over 500 miles before towing. During the next 500 miles of vehicle driving, stay below 45 mph when towing and avoid full-throttle acceleration.
These are Hybrid instructions, so read the manual for your own powertrain. Ask the installer to confirm suitable hitch equipment and the trailer's brake connections. Toyota's electronic Trailer Sway Control is separate from the sway-control device required above 2,000 lb.
Check your VIN through Toyota's recall lookup. A September 2, 2026 NHTSA report lists three potentially involved 2026 RAV4 Hybrids with accessory load-label errors. A separate October 7 Toyota recall concerns certain Plug-in Hybrids' control software. The VIN check tells you whether either applies; neither campaign revises the LE's towing figure.
loadmate provides decision support for towing safety, not legal weight certification. Score, compliance checks, and trip readiness are based on the data you enter and the regulator information current at the time of release. For legal weight evidence, use a certified truck scale / CAT scale. Towing remains the operator's responsibility. See /safety-disclaimer.

Frequently asked questions
- Why is my 2026 RAV4 LE AWD rated at 1,750 lb?
Toyota lists the US 2026 LE Hybrid at 1,750 lb in both FWD and AWD. Other 2026 Hybrid AWD grades are rated at 3,500 lb. Toyota publishes it as a grade difference and doesn't give a mechanical reason. Toyota's grade guide, p. 6.
- Did Toyota raise the 2025 RAV4 Hybrid's towing limit to 3,500 lb?
No. The published US 2025 Hybrid manual specifies 1,750 lb, and a higher rating for a 2026 grade doesn't carry back to it. Get a Toyota amendment that applies to your vehicle before you change a 2025 record. 2025 Hybrid towing chapter.
- Does every 2026 RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid have a 3,500 lb rating?
Toyota's US brochure names SE, Woodland and XSE at up to 3,500 lb. The current US comparison shows a dash for GR SPORT, leaving its figure unpublished there. The dash means no published figure, not a 0 lb rating or a prohibition. Plug-in Hybrid brochure, p. 9 and GR SPORT comparison.
- Can my RAV4 tow the camper I found?
Compare its complete loaded weight with the rating for your exact RAV4, then check tongue load, vehicle and axle limits, trailer ratings and towing equipment. The 2,000 lb example trailer above is 250 lb over the 2026 LE Hybrid AWD's 1,750 lb rating. 2026 Hybrid towing instructions.
- Can I put a trailer hitch on my RAV4?
Yes. The 2026 Hybrid manual specifies an appropriately rated hitch, installed according to its instructions, and Toyota recommends its own hitch and bracket. The hitch doesn't raise the vehicle's tow rating. Confirm the equipment for your exact vehicle and trailer. Toyota's hitch instructions.
- How do I tell if my RAV4 has a towing package?
Confirm installed towing equipment from the vehicle's records and with the installer. Get the vehicle's rating separately, from Toyota's year, powertrain, grade and drivetrain information. For 2026, an LE Hybrid AWD remains rated at 1,750 lb. Toyota's grade guide and Hybrid hitch instructions.
