Sources checked October 16, 2026: Nissan's 2026 US specifications and 2026 owner's manual, printed pp. 556โ€“562.

A September 2026 boat owner considering a Pathfinder listed boat, motor and trailer weights for an annual Florida Keys trip and said they'd left out fuel. That's the right start; the departure weight also needs fuel and gear, then a tongue reading checked against that trailer's own instructions.

How much can a Nissan Pathfinder tow?

The 2026 US Pathfinder is rated for a 3,500 lb or 6,000 lb loaded trailer, depending on its towing equipment. Two-wheel drive can get the higher rating too.

2026 US configuration Maximum loaded trailer Maximum tongue GCWR
SV or SL, 2WD or 4WD, without applicable Premium package 3,500 lb 350 lb 8,820 lb
SV or SL, 2WD or 4WD, with applicable Premium package 6,000 lb 600 lb 11,102 lb
Platinum, 2WD or 4WD, standard towing equipment 6,000 lb 600 lb 11,102 lb
Rock Creek, 4WD, standard towing equipment 6,000 lb 600 lb 11,102 lb

On SV and SL, the package adds a receiver, wiring harness and enhanced transmission cooling. Fitting a receiver later doesn't give you that factory configuration. Match Nissan's equipment tables to your vehicle, then use the 3.5L V6 towing table, printed p. 559. These figures cover the model currently on Nissan's US Pathfinder page.

For other vehicles, see the US towing capacity chart. Your Pathfinder also has its own gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR), two gross axle weight ratings (GAWR) and a gross combined weight rating (GCWR); the what can I tow guide shows how they fit together.

Whose tongue-weight target applies to the boat trailer?

Nissan accepts the trailer manufacturer's specified tongue load, as long as it stays within the vehicle's maximum. The 2026 manual, printed p. 557, gives that option next to its general 10โ€“15% guidance.

That matters for a boat trailer with different instructions:

Instruction Scope and boundary
Nissan: 10โ€“15%, or the trailer maker's specified load Applies to loaded tongue weight; the applicable 350 lb or 600 lb vehicle cap still holds
ShoreLand'r: 5โ€“7% Its manual's guidance for most standard-size boats, if it applies to your actual trailer
ShoreLand'r: boats of 1,000 lb and under A separate caveat says these may need up to 10%, so 5โ€“7% isn't universal

ShoreLand'r's current owner-information page links its manual, p. 3, Rev L dated May 3, 2021. Check the instructions for your particular trailer; one boat-trailer maker's range doesn't carry over to every boat or camper.

The same page warns that a weight-distributing hitch can interfere with surge-brake actuation, delaying braking or leaving the brakes partly applied. Nissan flags the same compatibility issue on printed p. 561. Settle the trailer, brake and hitch combination with their manufacturers before you choose equipment.

An Alabama Pathfinder owner's March 2018 forum reply separated a boat's surge brakes from the controller used for a camper. It's an older vehicle, but the right question; the current manuals tell you what your equipment needs.

What does a 4,400 lb boat trailer leave on a Platinum 4WD?

In this example, the tongue carries 286 lb, 6.5% of the complete 4,400 lb trailer, and the Pathfinder sits 462 lb under its GVWR.

The vehicle is a 2026 Platinum 4WD with factory towing equipment: 6,000 lb towing, 600 lb maximum tongue load and 11,102 lb GCWR from Nissan's manual, printed p. 559. Its published GVWR is 6,063 lb; assume your certification label confirms it.

Here's one example rig. Every load, and the trailer's own rating, is made up. Assume this ShoreLand'r boat trailer falls within the cited 5โ€“7% guidance and permits this weight-carrying connection, with working surge brakes and no weight-distributing hitch; a real trailer's identity and hardware need confirming.

Example input Weight and basis
Pathfinder baseline 4,800 lb with full fuel and fitted accessories; excludes people, trip cargo and removable ball mount
People 380 lb
Vehicle cargo 100 lb
Added ball mount and hitch equipment 35 lb, absent from the baseline
Complete loaded boat and trailer 4,400 lb, including engine, fuel, water, gear and tongue load
Tongue load 286 lb, assumed separately measured with the loaded trailer level
Trailer GVWR Assumed 5,000 lb label

The unhitched Pathfinder weighs 4,800 + 380 + 100 + 35 = 5,315 lb. Coupling adds the 286 lb tongue, putting 5,601 lb on the vehicle and 4,114 lb on the trailer axles. Combined weight is 5,601 + 4,114 = 9,715 lb, the same as 5,315 + 4,400 lb; both count the tongue once.

Separate check Example load Limit Difference
Pathfinder GVWR 5,601 lb 6,063 lb, label assumed to match 462 lb below
Combination GCWR 9,715 lb 11,102 lb 1,387 lb below
Trailer against Pathfinder rating 4,400 lb 6,000 lb 1,600 lb below
Tongue against Pathfinder maximum 286 lb 600 lb 314 lb below
Trailer against its own GVWR 4,400 lb 5,000 lb, assumed 600 lb below

The 6.5% tongue share fits the ShoreLand'r instruction this example assumes applies, but a percentage alone can't tell you the rig is stable. Axle readings and ratings, tires, component limits and the occupant-and-cargo placard are still unchecked, so the 462 lb is vehicle-weight room on paper, not permission to add that much cargo.

This example also stays under 5,000 lb, where Nissan's own documents disagree about weight distribution. The owner's manual, p. 560, and the 2026 Towing Guide, p. 5, recommend it above that point; the guide's p. 21 note 2 says it's required. For a heavier pairing, ask Nissan and the trailer and hitch makers. A lighter trailer still needs compatible equipment.

How can loadmate keep track of this trailer's arrangement?

Record where everything sits and what it weighs, so later packing changes refer to the boat trailer you actually checked. Because Nissan lets the trailer maker set the tongue target, you need to know which trailer you're towing; the example's 6.5% can't pick a target for yours.

In loadmate, set up storage zones using your trailer's measured geometry, and enter each load's weight, source and storage zone. Zone capacities are a packing aid; the trailer maker's instructions still decide loading and restraints, and photo-based location estimates need checking against measurements.

When you repack, update the recorded weight or location by hand. The load review shows how the entered item is distributed, and saving updates the affected checks on the Rig tab. The app's tongue-balance assessment uses regional guidance, so judge this boat trailer's required percentage against its own instructions.

A full weigh-in with its linked loads sets the baseline for later recorded changes; a coupling-only update doesn't replace it.

Explore loadmate for your Pathfinder's trailer loading.

Before the next outing, compare the record with the boat as packed, then weigh the loaded tongue and axles against that trailer's instructions and the Pathfinder's limits.

loadmate provides decision support for towing safety, not legal weight certification. Score, compliance checks, and trip readiness are based on the data you enter and the regulator information current at the time of release. For legal weight evidence, use a certified truck scale / CAT scale. Towing remains the operator's responsibility. See the safety disclaimer.

In loadmate, enter your boat trailer's measured storage geometry and item weights, and update the record by hand when the packing changes. Review each item's calculated distribution next to the trailer maker's loading instructions; the app's tongue guidance is regional, so the trailer maker sets this trailer's target. Frequently asked questions

Will a 2026 Pathfinder tow my boat once fuel and gear are aboard?

The 2026 US Pathfinder is rated for 3,500 lb or 6,000 lb, depending on factory towing equipment. Compare the complete loaded boat and trailer, not a dry boat weight, with your rating, then check tongue load, vehicle weight, axles and components against the trailer's loading instructions. Nissan's 2026 manual, printed pp. 556โ€“562.

Does a boat trailer need the same tongue-weight percentage as a camper?

Not necessarily. The 2026 Pathfinder manual accepts the trailer manufacturer's specified tongue load within the vehicle's maximum. ShoreLand'r's cited manual gives 5โ€“7% for most standard-size boats, with a separate caveat for boats of 1,000 lb and under. Check that it applies to your trailer; it isn't a target for every boat. Nissan manual, p. 557 and ShoreLand'r manual, p. 3.

Do I need a weight-distributing hitch below 5,000 lb?

Weight alone doesn't decide it; check the vehicle, trailer, brake and hitch instructions. Above 5,000 lb, Nissan's 2026 manual and towing guide recommend weight distribution in one place and require it in another. Nissan also warns that weight distribution can affect surge-brake operation, so settle your setup with the manufacturers. Nissan manual, pp. 560โ€“561 and 2026 Towing Guide, pp. 5 and 21.

Does the seven-pin connector mean my Pathfinder has a brake controller?

Not by itself. Nissan's 2026 manual treats electric-brake control equipment separately from the trailer connection, and electric brakes may need an aftermarket controller. Surge brakes use the trailer's own mechanical/hydraulic system. Identify your brake type and the compatible equipment. Nissan manual, printed pp. 562โ€“564.

Can a short or light-looking camper still need a closer check?

Yes. Length and dry weight don't tell you the loaded tongue weight, axle loads or component limits. For a 2026 Pathfinder, weigh the departure setup and compare it with your equipment-based rating and the trailer's instructions; another owner's towing experience can't supply those numbers. Nissan manual, printed pp. 556โ€“561.

Does a 2026 Rock Creek need the Premium package to tow 6,000 lb?

No. The US 2026 Rock Creek has standard towing equipment and a 6,000 lb maximum when properly equipped and loaded; its Premium comfort package is separate. SV and SL need their applicable Premium package for the higher rating, and Platinum gets it in 2WD or 4WD. Nissan's 2026 specifications.
