How much can a Kia Telluride tow?
The 2027 US gas Telluride is rated for a 5,000 lb braked trailer and 500 lb of tongue weight, X-Pro included. Kia's current gas manual gives Standard, X-Line and X-Pro the same towing limit, subject to the required equipment and loaded-weight conditions. See the 2027 gas towing table and tongue instructions.
The 2027 Hybrid is advertised at 4,500 lb braked, but its US manual also sets a 400 lb tongue ceiling and tells you to put 10โ15% of the fully loaded trailer weight on the tongue. At 4,500 lb, even 10% is 450 lb, 50 lb over the ceiling, so Kia's hybrid instructions can't all be met at the advertised maximum. If you're planning a hybrid pairing near the limit, ask Kia for an answer specific to your configuration; this guide can't give you a corrected rating. 2027 hybrid towing table and tongue instructions.
Both powertrains have a 1,653 lb unbraked-trailer limit. Heavier trailers need adequate brakes, installed and maintained for the actual equipment, under Kia's gas brake instructions and hybrid brake instructions.
For an earlier Telluride, use that year's manual and fitted-equipment information. The US towing capacity chart compares other vehicles, and the what can I tow guide explains the separate loaded-rig limits.
Does the TOW button mean my Telluride has the towing equipment?
TOW mode is standard across the 2027 lineups, but the factory hitch depends on the grade. Gas X-Pro SX and X-Pro SX Prestige include it; Kia lists it as available on the other 8 gas grades and all 5 hybrid grades. The gas and hybrid equipment rows list TOW mode and the hitch separately, so check what's actually fitted to your vehicle.
In a January 26, 2023 owner post, an X-Line buyer described reading tow mode on an invoice as a towing-package promise. That was an older generation; the current equipment rows answer the question for 2027.
A September 9, 2026 hybrid owner reported waiting for a hitch after buying for motorcycle-trailer use. In a separate May 24, 2026 owner comment, a buyer described checking California dealers to find a vehicle that was actually equipped. Those reports can't tell you what's in stock now, so check the vehicle you're collecting and get current fitment confirmed.
Even with the receiver fitted, three separate controls do different jobs:
| Control or connection | Its job in Kia's 2027 instructions | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Instrument-panel TOW button | Changes power output, transmission, braking and electronic stability control (ESC) behavior | Select the appropriate setting under Kia's instructions |
| Trailer Control Module connection | Recognizes an attached trailer through the installed communicating system | Confirm the actual connector/module fitment and recognition behavior |
| Infotainment Trailer Mode / Carrier Mode | Can bring up the relevant warning/icon and affect available assistance | Check the selected mode and the functions available on your vehicle |
Kia lets you enter trailer weight through the infotainment menu while in Park; that's a number you type, not a measurement. Drive/Terrain mode switching is unavailable while TOW mode is on. 2027 gas manual, printed p. 427, and TCM section, printed p. 442.
How does the Telluride recognize a connected trailer?
Through the fitted Trailer Control Module, separately from the TOW button; pressing the brake pedal after connecting is one trigger. The TCM section, printed p. 442, also lists recognition after driving at least 9 mph, so the stationary brake-pedal step lets you sort it out before moving a setup you haven't checked.
Once the trailer is recognized, some driver-assistance functions may be limited, and Kia tells you to check which are available. A warning/icon appears when the TCM is connected or Trailer Mode/Carrier Mode is selected in the menu, and that menu setting survives a restart, so check it before driving rather than reading the icon as proof of everything behind it. See the 2027 TCM instructions.
On printed p. 444, Kia covers connecting and removing the trailer. Detection needs genuine accessories that communicate the connection. After plugging in, press the brake pedal or use the turn signal so the controller detects the electrical load; do the same after unplugging, and assistance that was automatically disabled comes back. The menu selection is a separate check. 2027 gas manual, printed p. 444.
Ask the installer which exact 2027 gas or hybrid connection is fitted, and to show you the recognition behavior described for it. Working trailer lamps don't confirm that communication path. The lighting and brake checks still follow the electrical instructions and the equipment's own procedure.
What's still open with a 3,600 lb trailer on the gas X-Line EX?
This example pairing is 1,400 lb under the gas tow rating and 50 lb under the tongue ceiling, but the axle loads, combined limit and actual equipment still need confirming. A recognized connection doesn't settle any of those weights.
The vehicle is a 2027 US gas Telluride X-Line EX AWD, with 7 seats and 21-inch wheels, rated for 5,000 lb braked towing, 500 lb tongue load and a 6,261 lb GVWR, its maximum loaded weight. The figures come from Kia's gas specifications, GVWR table and towing table.
Here's one example rig. Every weight in it is an assumption, so swap in your own. It uses a conventional braked trailer without a weight-distributing hitch.
| Example input | Weight and condition |
|---|---|
| Telluride baseline | 4,800 lb with full fuel and all fitted towing hardware/accessories, before occupants, removable gear or trailer attachment; an assumed measured baseline, not brochure curb weight |
| People and removable gear | 400 lb of people plus 200 lb of gear in the vehicle |
| Trailer rating and load | Assumed 4,000 lb Trailer GVWR; 2,700 lb empty plus 900 lb added load gives 3,600 lb complete |
| Tongue load | Assumed 450 lb measured at the coupling with the loaded trailer level; included in the 3,600 lb total |
| Hitch components | Receiver, ball mount, ball and coupler assumed individually checked for at least the applicable 5,000/500 lb combination and correct fit |
The unhitched Telluride weighs 4,800 + 400 + 200 = 5,400 lb. Coupling adds the 450 lb tongue load, putting 5,850 lb on the vehicle and 3,600 โ 450 = 3,150 lb on the trailer axles. Together that's 5,850 + 3,150 = 9,000 lb, the same as the unhitched vehicle plus the complete trailer, with the tongue counted once.
| Separate comparison | Example load | Limit | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gas Telluride tow rating | 3,600 lb | 5,000 lb | 1,400 lb below |
| Vehicle GVWR | 5,850 lb | 6,261 lb | 411 lb below |
| Trailer GVWR | 3,600 lb | 4,000 lb, assumed | 400 lb below |
| Tongue load | 450 lb | 500 lb | 50 lb below |
| Combined weight | 9,000 lb | Kia's applicable limit needed | Unknown |
The 450 lb tongue load is 12.5% of 3,600 lb, inside Kia's 10โ15% instruction for this gas example. That 50 lb is the smallest margin you can actually calculate here; the unknown axle and combined limits could be tighter.
Subtracting the 4,800 lb baseline from GVWR leaves 1,461 lb; people, gear and tongue use 1,050 lb of it, landing on the same 411 lb. That's arithmetic, not your occupant-and-cargo placard. You still need the placard, the front and rear gross axle weight ratings (GAWR), loaded axle readings, Kia's applicable combined limit, and the complete trailer and hitch ratings. Kia keeps these checks separate in the gas manual, printed pp. 437 and 450โ456.
The connector/TCM, recognition, menu mode and physical brake operation are still for you or your installer to check, so this example stops short of calling the rig ready to tow.
How can loadmate compare the Telluride and trailer you have?
Enter your pair's supported ratings and loads in loadmate to see which weight checks can be assessed. With this gas Telluride only 50 lb under its tongue ceiling, every remaining limit matters once the equipment and load are final.
In the app's Can I Tow It? Research flow, the basic towing comparison uses Trailer GVWR, which for this example is 4,000 lb. The 3,600 lb loaded trailer (2,700 lb empty plus 900 lb added load) goes in the planner scenario. Enter the supported vehicle baseline and coupling values in their own fields; the rating comparison and the loaded scenario answer different questions.
Leave the unknown combined limit blank; Research marks checks that need missing optional information as unassessed. A complete saved-rig score needs the core specifications, including the gross combined weight rating (GCWR), so this example can't produce one. The vehicle setup and Compliance Snapshot docs explain the difference.
With real specifications and a measured baseline, keeping the rig's entries current ties later equipment and load changes to its weight checks. If the fitted setup changes, correct any affected starting-weight or rating entry against the documents. The app works from what you enter; Kia's recognition and active assistance still need checking at the vehicle.
Explore loadmate for your Telluride and trailer pairing.
Before you enter a missing number, get it from the label or from Kia. Before you trust a trailer-mode icon, find out what your installed connection actually communicates.
loadmate provides decision support for towing safety, not legal weight certification. Score, compliance checks, and trip readiness are based on the data you enter and the regulator information current at the time of release. For legal weight evidence, use a certified truck scale / CAT scale. Towing remains the operator's responsibility. See the safety disclaimer.

Frequently asked questions
- Can the Kia Telluride really tow 5000 lbs?
The 2027 US gas Telluride can, X-Pro included. It's rated for a 5,000 lb braked trailer with the required equipment, as long as every loaded-weight limit is met, and its tongue ceiling is 500 lb. Check your vehicle, axle, hitch and trailer limits for the pairing you have in mind. Kia's 2027 gas towing instructions.
- Do all Kia Tellurides have a towing package?
TOW mode is standard across the 2027 US lineups, but the factory hitch varies by grade. The gas X-Pro SX and X-Pro SX Prestige include it; the other gas grades and all hybrid grades list it as available. Check the fitted hitch and communicating connection on your vehicle. Gas specifications and hybrid specifications.
- Does the tow button stop the parking-assistance braking?
Not on its own. Pressing TOW changes driving behavior; in the 2027 manual, it's trailer recognition through the TCM, or selecting Trailer Mode/Carrier Mode in the menu, that can limit some assistance functions. Check which functions your installed system leaves available. 2027 gas manual, printed pp. 427 and 442.
- How much can the 2027 Telluride Hybrid tow?
Kia advertises a 4,500 lb braked maximum with the required equipment. The US manual's 400 lb tongue ceiling doesn't fit its own 10โ15% tongue instruction at that weight, since even 10% is 450 lb. Ask Kia about your combination before relying on the 4,500 lb figure. 2027 US hybrid towing instructions.
- Can I add a hitch after buying the Telluride?
Kia lists hitch equipment as available for the 2027 Telluride, but a spec page can't confirm current stock or retrofit fitment. Have the dealer or installer confirm the application for your model year and powertrain, the communicating connector/module and the trailer-brake requirements. Kia's gas specifications and electrical instructions.
- What should change when I unplug the trailer?
With the genuine communicating accessories described in Kia's 2027 manual, press the brake pedal or use the turn signal after unplugging so the controller detects the absent electrical load; assistance that was automatically disabled then returns. Check the menu separately, because a selected Trailer Mode/Carrier Mode setting persists through a restart. Gas manual, printed pp. 442 and 444.
